Women in Fly Fishing by Tiffany Fluitt - Owner of Gruene Outfitters
Our special guest speaker this month is Tiffany Fluitt, an accomplished fly fisher, and the owner of Gruene Outfitters in New Braunfels. Tiffany has been fishing for as long as she can remember, but took up the sport of fly fishing only seven years ago. As a kid, she spent summers fishing with her grandfather in Port O’Connor. He taught her how to catch redfish and sea trout, and how to go “floundering” after dark. During college at Texas State University, Tiffany applied for a weekend job at Gruene Outfitters. Under the expertise of her former boss, Ray Box, she has become an avid fly fisher, and outdoor enthusiast. Tiffany earned her Captain’s License in February of 2004 and continues to pursue all learning opportunities available. She loves teaching people to fly-cast outside the shop in Gruene, and is always eager to help customers with knots, rigging, and fly selection. Start: 7:00 pm
End: 9:00 pm
Traditionally, fishing and fly fishing activities have attracted more men than women to the sport. Even membership numbers in the Alamo Fly Fishers will support that statement. Nevertheless, we want to reach out, and encourage female participation in fly fishing. The theme of our September meeting is about Women in Fly Fishing. With more women than ever before venturing out on the water, Susan Thoms-Bhatia and Jennifer Greenberg have recognized there is a lack of fashion-friendly fishing clothing for women. They believe that women shouldn’t be forced to wear men’s clothing when they went fly fishing, and so they did something about it. They will be showing their “Girl on the Fly” apparel on September 18th at the Alamo Fly Fishers meeting. The “Girl on the Fly” clothing line offers a variety of shirts and shorts in cool, tropical colors and patterns in a variety of materials. | ||
