Demonstration of Tuffleye for Fly Tying

Steve Flanagan will be tying some flies, and demonstrating the use of Tuffleye before the August AFF meeting on the 21st. Select "Read More" below for details.

Our guest fly tyer at the August AFF meeting is our own long time member Steve Flanagan. As many of you know, Steve often ventures to the “dark side” of fly tying. You might say he has never met a material or a method he wouldn’t try. Steve often uses synthetic materials and epoxy in many of his flies, and has mastered many of the flies made famous by Bob Popovics. A new material called Tuffleye has been discovered, and is on the verge of replacing epoxy in fly tying, and even in rod building. Tuffleye is a light cured clear acrylic. It is being used like epoxy, but without any of the messy, smelly characteristics of epoxy. It is harder than epoxy, stays clear, sets in seconds only when you are ready, and doesn’t require mixing. It is better than epoxy, and even Bob Popovics agrees!

Tuffleye was developed by Dr. Ned Lunt, a dentist by profession, from right hear in San Antonio. Steve has invited Dr. Lunt to attend our meeting and give us some background on how Tuffleye was developed and how it can be used. In addition to dentistry, Dr. Lunt has a strong chemistry background where he spent some time in a R&D lab for a chemical company in polymer development. He knows what he is talking about! Tuffleye is an amazing replacement for epoxy that is easier to use and truly has better qualities than epoxy. Steve and Dr. Lunt will be on hand at the meeting to demonstrate and tell us about this new material for fly tyers. It is new technology that you will not want to miss!

More background and useful information on Tuffleye is also available online at www.wetahook.net . Check it out, and check out the demonstration on August 21st. I know you will be amazed at how easy it is to use!
