April 21st Chapter Meeting - Fly Show, Book Show, Map Show & Swap Meet
by Javier Trevino, AFF Vice President
Got Flies? Got stuff to swap/sell/trade. Its Spring Cleaning time!
I was going to do an April Fool’s joke announcing that Left Kreh or Flip Pallot or Jason Borger was going to visit our club – but –after much thought, I decided that after failing to provide a speaker for April, I might end up at the end of a hangman’s noose (or maybe a non-slip loop knot).
Some of our members have expressed that although they enjoy our speaker line-up – the 1 hour before the speaker is barely enough time to get to know other members, plan fishing trips, etc. So, this month, I’d like to do something a little different.
Before I describe what we’ll be doing, I’d like to emphasize that our club does meet every Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at the Church to tie flies, plan trips, show off pictures of recent trips, and most importantly create friendships (a.k.a fishin’ buddies) with like – minded flyfishers. The main reason I joined the club was to make new friends to fish with. Well – this happens on off-Tuesdays. I encourage you to show up and make some new friends, tell lies, get hooked up with last minute fishing adventures, tell lies, learn new tying techniques, tell more lies, and lastly keep out of trouble. Martha knows where I’m at every Tuesday night – at Church!!
The Fly Show
OK, now onto the event. A lot of us tie flies – lots of flies. Some tie Saltwater marsh flies exclusively, some tie Tarpon flies, bass bugs, dry flies, midges, streamers, wet flies, Steelhead flies, Spey flies, nymphs, “dark side” flies, perch jerkin’ flies, white bass flies, offshore flies, shark flies, etc… etc…etc…
I can picture in my head spreading our fly boxes full of flies (sometimes the fly boxes are just as innovative as our flies) over a dozen tables and showing off our flies – and talking about them to our club members. What a great way to get to know our club members. Bring a camera!! You will never see a bigger collection of flies in one room.
So, I’d like to encourage you to bring as many boxes full of flies as you can carry – set them up and sit back and enjoy members asking you why you use them, how to make them, how to use them.
To help me keep track (and to make sure we have enough space), please email me jtrevinoaff@gmail.com to confirm that you’ll be bringing flies. If we have to, we’ll expand into the hallway!!
The Swap Meet
A lot of us have really cool stuff that we don’t use. Bring it! Sell it! Trade it! Its spring cleaning time.
The Book Show
Most of us Flyfisher junkies have tons of books. Bring them too! Show them off! Tell us where you bought them! Ttrade them! Sell them! Email me so I can keep track jtrevinoaff@gmail.com
The Map Show
If you’re a map junkie (like me and Todd), bring those too!! Where’d you get them? Where do you fish? Email me so I can keep track jtrevinoaff@gmail.com.
I want this to get out of control!! I’d like to say we don’t have enough tables!! Did I say bring a camera?? Yes – I’ll bet that if we bring lots of flies, the estimated dollar value of our stuff will make the economic crisis look like spare change.
See you at the meeting...
